Continuing with our “series” on creating a safe, chemical free home, these next steps will be short and sweet. To read Part 1 and Part 2, click here and here.
CLEANSE – Paint:
Most paints and finishes emit toxic gases called volatile organic compounds (VOCs) that can stay in your home for months, or even years.
TRY INSTEAD: When shopping for paint, look for low- and zero-VOC paints. Avoid spray painting (or at least wear a mask) to prevent inhalation of toxic fumes and particles.
CLEANSE – Household Dust:
Dust not only irritates allergies, but can also contain hazardous chemicals from the air.
TRY INSTEAD: Unless you’ve got the cash to replace carpets with wood, cork or tile, you should stick with the basics. Make sure your vacuum has strong suction and a HEPA filter. Make sure to change air filters as recommended and vacuum once a week. Also, make sure you’re dusting with the Norwex Dusting Mitt or Envirowand. Both pick up dust and hold on, making it easier to rid your home of the dirt and dust.
CLEANSE – Shower Curtain:
Most shower curtains contain PVC, a chemical used to make plastic more flexible. This chemical has been linked to a host of health problems, including respiratory irritation, nausea and central nervous system damage.
TRY INSTEAD: A greener alternative like is ethylene vinyl acetate, which can be found online or at your local bed/bath store.
CLEANSE – Bottled Water:
Because of the harmful substances that are contained in the plastic bottles, bottled water is not any safer than tap water. Plus, they clog up landfills and take years to disappear.
TRY INSTEAD: Tap water is fine (see next tip). If you’d like a little flavor, try adding an essential oil like grapefruit or lemon, both known to aid in digestion and cleanse insides!
CLEANSE – Tap Water:
Filter your drinking water. Depending on your water supply, tap water can still be a source of pollutants. Check your local municipality’s water quality report and consider using a filter for your water.
TRY INSTEAD: There are many available water filters available on the market, so take your pick. Norwex Water Filtration System is also a great answer to filtered tap water. Aside from elimination of impurities and pollutants, the four step filtration system has magnesium technology, which helps to metabolize carbohydrates, proteins, and fats, which means better digestion!
